This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading fluency is the cornerstone of first grade. Few things help to build fluency better than having a classroom listening center! I am a first grade teacher at a brand new, small progressive charter school in New York City! We just opened our doors to 150 Kindergarten and First graders. We will eventually serve students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. We are one of only 6 charter schools in our district and are at the forefront of the charter school movement in NYC.
Our classroom is in the process of building a strong classroom library with books on many different levels and about many different topics. However, there is little room in our small charter school budget for extra supplies like listening center books. We have an actual listening center, but no books or storage space for this vital early childhood classroom resource.
By ordering fiction and nonfiction listening center books for our classroom, you will be helping my students to increase their reading fluency and comprehension skills, make learning to read fun and exciting, and support the ESL population in my classroom learn to speak and read fluent English. The listening center storage space will also help to keep our books easy to use and organized for quick classroom transitions in and out of the listening center.
With your help, my first graders will be able to reach their highest potential as readers. While contributing to the charter school movement by donating to our classroom, you will be changing the lives of so many students who would not otherwise have this great opportunity at an enriching education!
