Listening, Literacy & Science Skills With Scholastic News

My Students

The students at our neighborhood school represent Middle Eastern, Asian and African-Americans in a high poverty area of our city. We offer 100% free breakfast, lunch, and snack, also after school tutoring and English Language Acquisition. Our staff works together to provide the best opportunities for our students to achieve their personal best.

Our students come from little means, but bring BIG excitement to their daily learning.

Students are not able to have an opportunity to explore outside of their homes due to safety and financial concerns and we hope to bring that opportunity on our campus where they can investigate current events and science explorations.

The mission of the Academy is to educate the entire student (academically & socially) so that they can be to be successful in life and contribute back to society. Our staff truly believe this is the best way to break the poverty cycle and prepare our students for life, employment, college or trade school!

My Project

Scholastic News & Science Spin magazines will allow my second graders an opportunity to listen independently (on brand new headphones), read independently and read with a buddy current events that are happening all over the world! A majority of my students are English Language Learners and being able to read something different each week from a students viewpoint will improve their verbal and listening language skills.

When we finish these weekly magazines they will be sent home and shared with my students' families.

Many of my students are teaching their families English!

These magazines will be read over and over again as they have very little reading materials at home!
