Listening Leads to Reading!

My students need 10 portable CD players to listen to stories to learn reading skills which research has determined children must know before they can learn to read!

My Students

A child must listen to 1000 stories before they can begin to read. That means they need to listen to a story everyday for 3 years to reach this important milestone! I want to help all of my students reach this goal!

My students attend a rural school in South Carolina.

They come from many different backgrounds. Their families love them and work hard to provide them with their needs. However, many have not been exposed to the 1000 books that research has proven they need to have listened to before they can begin to read. Most of their parents/guardians work long hours and have not been home to read to their child. Several live in homes that speak little to no English. These parents and students want to leave kindergarten reading and I want to be sure to give them every opportunity to help them succeed.

My Project

Everyday, I work with small groups of students and individual students to work on their goals in reading and writing. During this time the rest of my students are working in areas that directly support their reading and writing growth. One of these areas is "Listening to Reading." This area allows students to choose books to listen to on a tape and follow along with the book. Listening to stories expands a child's vocabulary, exposes them to print concepts, connects spoken words to written words and most importantly fosters a love for reading! Unfortunately, our classroom is lacking in enough resources for students to listen to stories. Right now, we are limited to only 3 students being able to listen to stories at a time. With these resources, 10 more students will be able to listen to stories during this time. They will be able to listen to stories which will coincide with themes I teach such as nutrition, seasons, friendships, diversity and many more!

By donating to this project you will be providing resources for students to be able to listen to many stories.

You will be fostering their emerging language and literacy skills and providing a strong literacy foundation for the rest of the life!
