This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and amazing kids from the south side of Chicago. Most of the kids I teach are faced with challenges in their lives, both at home and at school. As their music teacher, I hope to help my students by encouraging them to express themselves in positive ways.

My students love music class because they get a chance to share a creative experience with their peers.

Our school is run on a bare bones budget, and funding for the arts is just not there. Your donation would help to provide a quality musical experience for deserving students.

My Project

Music class is a fun place to get together and be creative in a large group. With this project, I am hoping to create a more introspective place within the music classroom, where students can go and listen to music by themselves.

A listening center will allow my students to experience all types of music and form their own opinions about it, without the outside influence of others in the class.

Going to the listening center will be a special treat. I plan on loading the MP3 players with all genes of music: rock, jazz, hip-hop, country, and even classical. You never know what music might spark a child's interest! I will include music from all over the world, which will help my students to have a more global approach towards the arts.

While all grades will use the listening center, I am really excited about my middle school students experiencing it. They may have heard of Metallica, for example, but would be embarrassed to admit to never hearing their music. This MP3 center would allow the kids to explore their musical interests in a discreet way.

I'll never forget listening to my favorite band on a Discman growing up. My parents couldn't hear the music, but I sure could, and it was part of what inspired me to become a musician. I want my students to have this experience, as well.
