Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my students listen while they learn! I am a second grade teacher at a high-poverty school. Our classrooms are lacking the essential supplies that our students need to be successful and compete with other schools.
My students come from homes with little or no educational materials, therefore all of their learning is done while at school. Many of our students are refugees from war-torn countries such as Burma and Somalia. They have come to America in search of a better future and are very eager to learn. However, learning English is a difficult process and they are significantly behind their peers because of the language delay.
Having a CD player and listening center will help my students in numerous ways. The second-language students will benefit in that they can hear someone else read the words for them. A listening center will aid students with their word recognition as well as increase their vocabulary. Other students will also benefit from a listening center because it will increase their fluency and confidence in their own reading ability.
Seeing these students struggle everyday is heartbreaking. They work so hard and want so badly to succeed in school. With little to no supply money in our budget, I am always looking to donors like yourself to help support my students. You can make a difference-no matter how small!
