Listening Centers for Split-Level Learning Environment
My students need four listening stations (and 20 headphones) that can use CD, cassette, or radio to improve listening comprehension in Spanish.

As a second-year Teach For America corps member, I teach 5th-8th grade Spanish in two urban, low-income schools in Connecticut.
This year I will be teaching a split-level class, with two different courses being taught at the same time by myself, from a cart. This year, one of my goals is to instill much higher levels of confidence in listening and speaking among my students.
Setting up listening centers will not only improve students' confidence and proficiency in oral language, it will also solve the age-old teachers' dilemma of "How can I be in two places at once?" In order to bring my high-needs students up to a level playing field with their advanced suburban counterparts, every moment of class time must be maximized. Learning centers will allow half of my split-level class to conduct their own listening comprehension exercises (including cultural exposure) so I can do direct instruction with the other half of the class. Listening centers will also be very beneficial for advanced and independent learners in my other classes.
Your help, no matter how small or big, will make it possible for a split-level foreign language class, as exceedingly rare as it may be, actually function in a manner that fosters student achievement. As Spanish proficiency becomes an increasingly valuable asset for college and careers, YOU can help at-risk middle schoolers develop life-long skills!
