Listening Centers for Beginning Readers

My students need listening centers and read-along books to develop literacy skills to begin reading.

My Students

My students come from a neighborhood of severe poverty and hardship. They come to school with a smile everyday in spite of some of the hardships they are facing at home and are ready to learn and engage in activities.

My school is special for sure.

While we deal with some intense emotional and behavioral issues, we have so many moments of happiness and laughter with these students that I hope are making a difference in their lives. Our staff is one of a kind. Our teachers work so hard to get through to these kids and do whatever it takes to help them come closer to success.

I want my students to have the same opportunities as all children and while a lot of my kids have not been read to much in their first years this listening center can provide them with read aloud while I work intensely with small groups of students on developing fundamental literacy skills.

My Project

Upon entering kindergarten many students have yet to develop the skills need to even begin to learn how to read. Young children love books though as well as love being read to. As a teacher in a classroom of 25 students I don't get to read aloud as often as I would like and these listening centers are the perfect opportunity for students to be read to while I can work with small groups of students on building the fundamental skills they need to begin reading on their own. Listening and following along to books will also help students to build these very important skills.
