When students are poor listeners, they tend to dismiss important information as boring or unimportant. Poor listeners will let their minds wander. Listening activities are important in the classroom to enable students to learn how to be effective listeners.
Our third grade classroom is made up of children from around the world.
We have 27 students, 14 boys and 13 girls. Additionally, 17 of the students are ESL. My students attend an inner city neighborhood elementary school with a high rate of students qualifying for free and reduced lunches.
My Project
Hearing a book read will show the students how words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It will help the students to focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also give an important introduction to listening skills that students must master in order to learn to read.
Narrators on tape tend to embellish their storytelling with silly voices and dramatic enhancements.
They emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and make children eager to learn how to read.
