My Students

My students have a REALLY BIG GOAL of reaching 1.7 years of reading growth this year. In a traditional school, 1 year of growth is expected. It is my job to push my students further because they started at a greater deficit and need to make more than a year of growth in order to catch up.

My school is a charter school that serves a low-income community.

The students who enter my classroom are already behind their more affluent peers in reading. The students and parents are enthusiastic about learning, but do not have the tools (books, writing utensils, etc.) to work on reading and writing outside of school. With a longer school day, longer school year, and strategic planning, my students will make significant gains to leave first grade reading on grade level, so that they have a fair chance at life.

My Project

My students need a CD player, multi-headphone splitter, and headphones to create a listening center. The listening center is a critical part of my classroom. Students need to hear good readers read to them so that they learn how to read with fluency and intonation. They should not just listen to me or their parents read all year. It is crucial that they are exposed to different voices and readers, which will be possible through CDs and books used at the listening center. Students will rotate through a number of independent work stations in order to build skills that will make them better readers, most crucial to this is the listening center.

This project will allow my students to be exposed to different tones, accents, and voices so that they understand reading in a whole new light.

They will be able to access readers they would otherwise have never encountered. Additionally, by discovering new, fun books, they will gain a love for reading that they can take with them beyond elementary school.
