Listening Centers have become the backbone of learning to read and comprehend.
I am a first grade teacher in a Title One school, which is located in the Bronx, New York.
My students are eager first graders who can hardly contain their excitement over learning to read. They are really like sponges and want to absorb words and books. We very much need a listening center.
My Project
Many students need to hear fluent reading, and quite frankly, it is difficult to find time in a jam packed schedule for read-alouds. Plus children who have difficulty with understanding story because they are struggling to read now have the opportunity to concentrate on comprehension instead of decoding. Struggling readers absolutely need to be able to listen to books. Imagine a six year old, who isn't capable of reading on level, being able to keep up with non-struggling readers. Talk about a boost to their self-esteem.
This center allows for eight students at a time to benefit from listening to a book.
The Math stories and classroom classic stories read-alongs match part of our reading series. A listening center could make a world of difference for a child who is having trouble reading. Thank you for your consideration.
