My Students
My kindergarten students are learning and growing in a short period of time. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring different strengths to the classroom. My school has many students who come from low income households and have not been able to attend preschool to prepare them for school.
Each child is encouraged to develop at his or her own pace.
I love engaging them in conversations, asking them to describe what they are doing, help them make new friends, and provide a variety of activities to spark imagination and facilitate learning. Exploring new ideas is very exciting for these little scholars.
I focus on the fact that every child is unique that learning can be fun. There is so much for young students to explore, I never want them to be bored with learning. I always want my students to leave my classroom knowing everything they need to be successful in first grade.
My Project
There are many benefits of having a listening center in the kindergarten classroom. When my students are listening to stories being read aloud they are developing critical comprehension skills.
Hearing a book read on CD will help students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way.
It helps them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audiobooks will also give an important introduction to listening. This is a skill that every child must master in order to learn to read.
Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. Books that provide excitement and interest to children can serve as a stepping stone to every other kind of reading experience.
