This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember reading your first book? I do! I was a first grader and remember how proud and empowered I felt. My first graders and paving the way to becoming great readers but need some support.
My students come from an impoverished community, riddled with gang violence.
There is instability all around them and school has literally become a safe haven. Some of them are homeless and are bussed. 100% of my class are English Learners and need oral language support in order to reach first grade speaking and reading benchmarks. Our school is a Title 1 school and has been affected by budget cuts. I provide as much as I can from my own pocket but would surely appreciate your help in providing my class with a listening center.
My Project
My biggest challenge this year has been to meet the needs of 26 struggling first graders. As you can imagine six year olds require lots of attention. I do not have any parents that speak English or a teacher's assistant to help in the classroom. The one thing I have not been able to establish in my class has been a Listening Center. All of our equipment is so old and unreliable that when I think it's ready to go, it fails. My students need to hear models of English to help with their oral language and reading skills. I am asking for you to help me with a listening center dock, various library books with CD, a microphone with USB to record oral presentations. a set of fun Greg and Steve music Cd's for my students and some items to organize. All of these items focus on oral language development, speaking, reading fluency and comprehension skills. This center will be used during Universal Access time, when I conduct small group targeted instruction to meet the need of all students.
I strongly feel my Listening Center Project is very important for my students because it will help them reach their speaking and reading goals.
First grade is the foundation of a child's education and it is where they learn to read. It is said that you learn to read in first grade and you read to learn thereafter. I thank you in advance to helping me meet the diverse needs of my students, for I can not do it alone. It takes a village!
