This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in my classroom love stories. I want to help my students unlock the meaning in written language. For students that struggle with reading I am compelled to make reading fun and exciting and foster independence for my first graders with special needs.

My students are first graders in a large urban school in New York City.

They are bright and excited about learning however many of them are students with special learning needs. Many of my students are already below grade level in reading and need extra support to read books that are on grade level.

My Project

I cannot wait to use this listening center with my students daily during reading centers. This headphone set and CD player will allow 6 students to have a story read to them while they follow along in the book. I have class sets of books on CD and our weekly Shared Reading story also comes on CD. This will scaffold student learning by allowing my lowest readers access to the weekly story without their inevitable frustration when they cannot read all of the words in the story.

This project is critical because for special education students especially the achievement gap is a literacy gap.
