My students need literature in both Spanish and English, a listening center for audio books, and a collection of literature for independent reading on comfy bean bags.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Travel to far away places at the push of a button? YES, it's possible! A listening center really makes that happen for children. Their vivid imaginations really become engaged when they listen to audio read-alouds. Bean bags, books, and good friends ... what more can a student ask for?
We are a class of 17 third graders in an EFL (Extended Foreign Language) program with instruction in both English and Spanish.
We inspire our teacher to do her best every single day! Our school is in Florida, so it's no surprise that our class is of 100% Hispanic origin. We are in a public school located in a working-class neighborhood. Many students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch due to family income.
My Project
I smile just thinking about my students relaxing on a bean bag while sharing a book - completely oblivious to the fact that they're in the classroom! I'm hoping this thought becomes a reality. Reading is more than just a mental exercise - it's a door that leads to future success. It's my mission to push that door wide open! A beautiful and comfortable listening center would make my students look forward to reading every day. Quality literature has the ability to inspire and motivate children. Listening to stories takes the pressure off of the children, too. After all, they aren't going to be receiving a grade for it! I want them to know that literature is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy themselves. Hopefully, this lesson will last a lifetime.
Libraries in my community are closing at an alarming rate.
My students deserve a quality classroom library with audio books and other literature. Your generous donation would make it happen. Who knows? My students might pay it forward when they become successful and literate adults in my community! Thank you for your consideration.
