My students need a listening center equipped with a table, headphones, CD player, auxillary connections, and listening activities to enhance their learning and reading abilities.
A typical day in our classroom consists of morning meetings, Daily 5 (listening and reading activities), integrated math and science centers. Writing is integrated throughout all subject areas throughout the day. My favorite quote is "Reading is Your Superpower!". We love to read!
Our school is a Title I school located in a small rural area in South Carolina.
It is a primary school (grades prekindergarten to second grade). My students are eager to learn and about 80% of them qualify for free and reduced lunch. They do not have many resources at home for them to enhance their reading skills. They currently do not have a listening station in the classroom due to lack of resources. They would love to have the opportunity to listen to reading or work on a reading skill through the use of a listening center.
Our school does a great job at promoting more opportunities for students to improve in their reading skills. Our classroom was an addition to the kindergarten team this year (currently eight classes) and we have 28 students. We are utilizing furniture from various classrooms in our school and would love to have a center that we could call our own. The listening center would allow my students to work independently at their own pace to improve their reading skills.
My Project
Through the use of the listening center, my students will be able to work independently during our Daily 5 (2 hours per day)reading schedule by listening to a story and following along with the book. They can also enhance their phonics skills through use of the phonics listening kit. This will help improve their ability to enhance their reading skills.
This project will make a difference in the classroom by giving my students the opportunity to listen to reading to improve their reading skills.
Currently, they do not have this opportunity due to lack of resources. This project will allow them to grow in reading and learn to love the joy of reading, while giving them the extra help they need to meet the Kindergarten level for reading by the end of the year.
