Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Tests. They follow us throughout our lives and they increase in importance every year. As my students enter into fourth grade, they enter into their second year of state tests. A major part of those tests measure their ability to listen critically and respond to a short story read aloud to them.
I teach a fabulous group of fourth graders at a public school in New York.
I had this group of kids in third grade, and cannot wait to work with them again. I work in a collaborative team-teaching setting with another teacher (I, the special education teacher and my partner, the general education teacher). The reason for this is the make-up of our class. We have four students with autism and 15 general education students. Our kids with autism are very high functioning academically and need extra support with social interactions. The general education students in my class are great role models for the students with autism. The general education students are encouraged to demonstrate appropriate social interactions that help the students with autism develop socially. Our classroom is a very safe place for individuality and learning. We teach the importance of diversity and being a helpful participant in the classroom. Our students enjoy learning and we challenge them on a daily basis.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are high-interest audio books and personal CD players. These materials will allow my students to practice their listening skills. You might think that listening skills develop easily without much additional practice. However, some people struggle in this area. In New York, students are required to take state tests that include a listening portion. Students listen to a short story and then answer questions about that story. In order to prepare my students to be successful on their tests and in life, I believe that having interesting audio books for them to practice their listening skills is imperative. This way, if I know that a certain group of students are struggling with listening, I can set them up with an interesting audio book and a personal CD player. They will be able to find a comfortable place in the classroom to listen to the book and answer teacher-made questions to help them practice what they will be required to do on the state test.
With your help, my students will have access to interesting audio books and a means to listen to them.
This is crucial in developing all students' listening skills. My students will be excited about using a CD player and listening to audio books. Not only will my students get good practice for their state tests, but they will also be exposed to interesting books and hopefully be excited about reading. Your donations will be used by students who will feel excited about using technology to learn.
