Listening And Learning In Kindergarten

My students need an 8-Station Junction Box, a set of Cassette Read-Alongs and 6 CD Read-Along Kits, including "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" and "The Big Hungry Bear".

I teach Kindergarten in California. The mission of our school is to teach our students to be life long learners and prepare them to participate in our democratic society. We accomplish this, in part, by integrating art, music and community based service learning into our daily curriculum.

Each day students develop literacy in a number of ways. They listen to stories, learn poems and songs, practice sounds and letters and explore books independently. Each day I work with small groups reading books at their level. In order for this to be successful the rest of the class needs to be engaged in meaningful literacy activities.

One activity the children enjoy is listening to recordings of favorite stories. By following along in their own copy of the book they are beginning to develop the skills necessary to begin reading on their own. In order to accomplish this we need multiple copies of high quality books along with CD recordings of the text. We also need a junction box that allows me to plug in 4 sets of headphones so many students can listen without disturbing the rest of the class.

Your generous donation will make it possible for small groups of children to enjoy listening to recorded stories each day. This will serve as a meaningful and independent activity that students enjoy. It will also enable me to focus on reading instruction with another small group.
