This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school district is shifting towards a more student-centered, and student-driven learning environment. My classroom consists of 21 first graders who come in every single morning excited about learning, and can’t wait to see what is in store for them that day. Of my 21 students, I have 3 English Language Learners in my classroom as well as 2 students who receive Special Education services. In addition, I have 7 students receiving RTI services. Three-quarters of our school's population qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
Many of my students mention that they do not have enough supplies and resources to continue their learning at home, so I want to ensure that I am giving my students the best, and most enriching experiences at school every single day.
My students are so proud of their work, are extremely helpful to each other, and give 100% effort every single day.
My Project
My students use a computer phonics program on Chromebooks for at least 20 minutes every day. Some students brought in headphones at the beginning of the year, but many of their headphones have broken and stopped working. Many students cannot afford to purchase another set of headphones for school. Unfortunately, I only have 5 pairs of headphones that I am able to let my students borrow, and that is not nearly enough for my whole class. In addition to the lack of quantity that I have, the 5 headphones that I have are ripped and are on the verge of breaking as well.
As they are working on the program, whiteboards help my students encode and decode words they are using and hearing.
This helps my students develop into better readers and to develop a feeling of self-confidence in their reading skills.
