My students need exciting accessible books for struggling readers. Books for emergent readers often don't spark interest for children who find reading unappealing. I am also asking for headphones to help our non readers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students make up the third grade ICT class in a high poverty school in Washington Heights. Despite the fact that almost 90% of the students in my school are from low income families, my class is made up of an amazing group of children who love to learn. These children love school. They are inquisitive, creative, and very enthusiastic. They absolutely love reading, and many of them are approaching grade level and some are even reading above grade level. I can't wait to watch them grow even more this year!

My Project

My students gravitate more toward books that have graphic novel set ups, like Geronimo Stilton, with interesting illustrations which gets them reading more often. I also have students who are non readers and need to listen to the books on the Kindles we are lucky enough to have in our room from a previous Donors Choose project with headphones.

I have many low level readers in my class that often don't get the opportunity to practice their reading and learning outside of the classroom because of lack of books that interest them or are on their level as well a lack of support at home.

The library in my classroom is limited and I've noticed that many of my students have plateaued on their reading levels. It is hard to come up with a variety of high interest books on lower levels due to availability within our curriculum and lack of funding and resources. In addition, I have students who are reading above a third grade level and they need higher level books to continue to push them academically. I have scavenged the internet and put together a list of books tailored to my student population! This project will bring that list to life in our library.
