Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students I teach come from a variety of different economic backgrounds; with 100% of students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in San Diego. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, and Burmese.
Our school is home to students that strive to be confident, respectful, responsible, and healthy thinkers.
I am kindly asking for your support in helping us build our classroom library. We need leveled reading books that are interesting and easily accessible through-out the day.
"We know that books help kids develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies- much more than any other media. Books are interactive; They give us new ways to think and new ideas."
These students often show up to school as reluctant readers and I need your help in offering them a wide variety of books that they can read...help me help them fall in love with the joys of reading.
My Project
According to researchers listening centers: help students decode unfamiliar words, teaches critical listening skills, introduces new vocabulary, and provided an additional read-aloud model. Our most reluctant readers are often those that struggle the most. Every day I witness kids eager to become great readers quickly getting frustrated with task of reading independently.
Help me provide a listening center where students can once again find their love of reading.
This designated space in the classroom will give our readers an opportunity to focus on the sounds of words read without interruption. Materials in the center will directly support and reinforce classroom instruction. This type of work is particularly beneficial for our struggling readers.
