Listen Up! We Need a Listening Center!

My students need a listening center and some great non fiction texts to listen to during work time.

My Students

We love to learn! We are curious about the animal kingdom and want to learn more. Unfortunately many of the non-fiction texts that we want to read are above our reading level. This listening center will provide us with an opportunity to learn even more independently.

We are an inner-city public school in New York State in which 95% of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

The majority of our student population is African American, and many of the students are of Caribbean decent. They are all enthusiastic learners eager to know more about the world outside their neighborhood.

My Project

This listening center, and the books that go with it, will allow my struggling readers to further investigate the animal kingdom. Each year we conduct a research project on our favorite animal, which incorporates our reading, writing and science curriculum's. Students are fascinated by the animal kingdom and eager to learn more, but often frustrated by the lack of literature available to them at their reading level. This listening center would allow many more students to gain access to the information they seek while providing lots of reading support and familiarity with non-fiction text, which is often a challenge for my lowest level readers.

This listening center would help level the playing field for my struggling readers who are eager to learn more from non-fiction text but are challenged by it's more complex vocabulary and language structure.
