Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Listen up! Many of the Second Graders in my class are English language learners, but only have my one voice modeling the language to them each day. The public school I teach in is located in a low-income, high-need area of Colorado, and quality materials are difficult to come by.

As English Language Learners, my students need to build their listening comprehension skills in order to be able to understand, converse in, and read English successfully.

My students absolutely LOVE listening to stories read aloud, and I know that they will enjoy and benefit from a listening center.

My Project

All of our CD players are broken, even those I've replaced with my own money. I've realized that these cheap CD players won't survive 26 second grade hands - we need solidly constructed iPods. A listening center in our classroom will provide my students with the opportunity to sit with stories I have read to them, and hear them again. A listening center will reinforce and allow my students to practice the phonics and comprehension skills that I teach them. A listening center will model the English language for my learners, and help them to become successful English listeners, readers and speakers. A listening center in our classroom will allow my students to record themselves reading their favorite books, and listen to each others' voices. In short, a listening center will be like having a second teacher in the classroom.

My students this year, and for many years to come, will enjoy and learn from the equipment and materials that constitute a listening center.

Through your generosity, my students would receive two iPods that will allow them to develop reading comprehension and English Language skills. Thank you so much!
