My Students
My students attend a consolidated middle school in a high poverty area. Middle school can be a time when we all struggle to understand our identity and our place in the world. This is even more true for my students as they transition from small elementary schools of several hundred to a middle school of over a thousand! They are compassionate, resourceful, and motivated. They are also forgetful, discouraged, and reluctant. Very often they are all of these things in a single day! It's a privilege to accompany them every day as they learn and grow.
My Project
Differentiation is the name of the game! This year I am working hard to transition to a workshop model in my classroom. I am already seeing huge differences in my students' focus and achievement in the classroom. However, we are missing some basic equipment to really make this work.
My students need high-quality, durable headphones for our digital content station.
There are currently four stations in our classroom. Student groups spend twenty minutes at a time working at each of the four areas: Independent, Collaborative, Digital Content, and Small Group. The increased quality of discussion and the opportunities for remediation have completely blown me away.
However, the lack of headphones has consistently created issues with our digital content station. Although earbuds were on our student supply list at the beginning of the year, not all students were able to purchase them. I have purchased inexpensive headphones for students myself, but frankly these just don't hold up to daily classroom use. They are difficult to sanitize, uncomfortable to wear, and have very poor sound quality. After just a few weeks of heavy use, they have to be thrown away.
Our classroom needs a set of high-quality, durable headphones that can be dedicated to this station in the classroom. Not only will this improve the experience for students working at this station, but it will allow students working in other stations to focus better. The headphone splitter adapters will allow for partners to watch content on the same Chromebook, and then work together to discuss and prepare a written response.
Stations have already transformed our classroom. This equipment is the final missing piece to complete this exciting change!
