My Students
At our school, everyone is a performer and a musician. They begin singing on day 1 in pre-K, and they learn to play at least three instruments by the end of 3rd grade.
This year our school grew to include a "middle academy." To meet the desires of our middle school students, the music department has grown to include a traditional band.
Students who elected to be in band also are allowed to select their instrument. I am teaching a percussion class for those students interested in learning to play the snare drum in the school band.
My Project
We have started the year playing with drum sticks on table tops. With the five snare drum kits I am requesting, we will have enough drums to get started on real instruments. I am also requesting marching snare drum straps, because we are working towards marching in at least one parade this year. We can attach the straps to any drums that we have available to our students.
I was really surprised at how excited my percussion students were just to play with drum sticks on table tops.
With these five drums, we can make class that much more exciting. With currently 14 students enrolled, they will be able to spend at least 1/3 of class time on a real drum. The more time spent on real drums, the sooner we can take it to the streets and start marching!
