Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The main challenge my students face is living in a low-income community. Many of my students are required to take care of themselves and have little to no help with schoolwork at home. I try my best to make my classroom a safe, comfortable environment that is their home away from home.
My students are all ELL students.
I have 20 total students, 12 girls and 8 boys. Each student is wonderful in his/her own way. They attend a public school in a low-income community. There is little/no parent support, which makes it a little difficult to have at-home support. My students are everything to me! That's why it is so important that my classroom is where they want to spend their time at learning!
My Project
I am requesting 7 read-along stories with cd's to use with our Daily 5 center "Listen to Reading", an 8 station junction box and a storage unit that can keep their headphones and books organized. We currently have a limited supply of read aloud books in our listening center library, with only a few stories on cd . All students visit the listening center weekly and I want students to be motivated by visiting this center.
Following along in the book while they listen to the story helps students improve fluency, vocabulary, and overall comprehension.
They also enjoy being read to, even if it's a recording. Listening to the stories teaches students to read with proper tone and expression. My listening center truly offers students a wonderful learning opportunity.
