My Students

Coming into my classroom at the start of the year, I often heard "I can't..." Some students believe they can't spell, can't add, and worst of all: "I can't read." While my students are building their skills in literacy, they need help finding interest and confidence in reading.

My 2nd grade students are primarily of a low-income, black, urban population.

Our school is in its founding year, and most of my students are coming from public schools in Philadelphia that failed to meet their needs. As a teacher concerned for the huge achievement gap that my students already face, I want to do everything possible to build their confidence and get them interested in reading. Half of my class came into the year at a Kindergarten reading level, and they so desperately need to feel successful in school.

My Project

These 8 headphones would be used with the tablets that the school has already provided in order to increase literacy skills amongst the students. Many applications allow students to listen to stories being read aloud, and show the words and pictures along with the story. This provides students with positive experiences of reading that they so often cannot have in other locations. Because of the acoustics of the room, headphones are essential to the use of the tablets in order to foster a calm learning environment.

In addition to the low reading skills of my students, many of them also struggle with the behavioral and emotional side of learning in a classroom.

The effect of having headphones in the classroom would be tremendous. It would allow some of my students to calm down, it would create reduced volume in the room, and it would give positive sensory experiences to those children who struggle with a typical classroom environment.
