Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you speak a second language? All my students are working on becoming bilingual and bi-literate. Knowing two languages will help them in the future in our global economy and increase their brain capacity. By the way, Spanish is the 2nd most frequently spoken language.
We have a great school of about 450 students in a small town located next to a large urban area.
My students come from middle class families and poor families. 60 Percent of the students at our school qualify for free lunch. We are Hispanic, Pilipino, African American, White and everything in between. What do we all have in common? We attend the only dual immersion Spanish Language school in our district! We are dedicated to learning a second language and to being experts in our primary language.
We know that in a global economy, learning a second language can open many doors in the future. My students work hard to make this dream a reality. We just need a little extra help.
My Project
Our desire is to learn a second language. Easier said than done. It requires time, work, and materials. We have the time. My students work hard. However, we are lacking some of the materials. I need students who are struggling with the second language, either Spanish or English, to get extra support by listening to stories while they read them. Many students do not go home to parents waiting to help them and read them bed time stories. These students need to spend time listening to stories in a safe, comfortable environment where they can practice their reading and succeed. My students need wireless headsets so they can listen to stories during their Daily 5 activities in both Spanish and English!
What I like about the wireless headsets is that students don't have to sit clustered around a too small table while one student fidgets with the buttons or another one starts talking.
They can go where they want, grab a pillow or cushion, settle in a comfy corner and read, read, read
