My Students

Have you ever listened to someone tell a story and their emotion completely sucks you in? I want my students to learn to read fluently so they can draw their listeners in to their stories.

My school is in a middle-class neighborhood in Nevada.

We are a new school and are still working on getting all of the supplies we need. There are 32 students in my classroom. They are an eager bunch of learners. They always strive to make themselves better than they were the day before. The kids love giving presentations, teaching one another, and telling stories to entertain. My students also enjoy learning about new places and things that they have never heard of before.

My Project

My students need a variety of leveled books with CDs, four individual CD players, and two adapter cords for charging. Becoming a good reader is an essential life skill, but one that is hard to master. Students not only need to learn to read, but they need to learn to read with feeling and emotion. As a teacher, I can model fluent reading, but hearing other voices and personalities read is an integral part in the reading process. The resources in this project will give my students a chance to hear many characters and stories come alive. The variety of literature will give students a chance to choose a story that interests them and is at their reading level. The CDs allow the students to hear other fluent readers and give students a chance to reread the story and model their expression and fluency after the reader on the CD.

Fluent readers become fluent speakers.

Fluent speakers are better communicators and writers. Students who master these skills have a better chance in school and the world beyond. Funding this project will give my students the chance to become fluent readers and speakers and, ultimately, better students.
