Listen, Love, Learn- Exploring Reading in Listening Centers

Help me give my students more accessibility to the wonderful world of reading! Listening centers are a fantastic way to facilitate a love of stories for readers of all levels!

My Project

My wonderful students have a variety of needs in the classroom, and in an effort to make reading accessible to everyone, I believe that a listening center would be an incredible asset to our classroom. When students read silently to themselves, they engage with the text visually. However, if students see the printed text WHILE listening to it, then they are using both auditory and visual processing. This makes their time with the text twice as valuable!

Students of any level can benefit from a listening center!

Struggling readers, for example, can rely on what they are hearing to identify unfamiliar words that they would have otherwise missed while reading silently. This allows them to more completely comprehend the text and engage in meaningful discussion with their peers. On-level students can practice inflection and pronunciation to help them become more fluent readers as they listen to the voice model these skills for them. Advanced students can challenge themselves with different, more complex stories that push them to new reading horizons beyond the grade-level materials.

In this classroom, no one has to be "other". My goal is for every student to have access to reading, regardless of ability. A listening center can be a hub for all students to access the text, including those with special needs. Everyone deserves to be a part of our learning, and a listening center can open doors for students who may struggle reading printed text on their own.
