Listen, Learn, Laugh! This is what my students and I do each and everyday when we come to school. We are a Title 1 school in a high needs area where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. I teach in a third grade integrated co-teaching class with nineteen students. Eleven of these students are general education students and eight of them are special education students. The special education students have learning disabilities as well as speech and language impairments.
As third graders we are trying hard to improve our reading skills. This is not an easy task. In a classroom with both general education students and special education students it is difficult to use the same materials for each child all the time. Instruction and materials must be differentiated. However it is also important for all of the children to be able to understand, enjoy, and discuss the same pieces of literature.
We are planning a unit of study on fairytales. We currently do not have materials for each child to enjoy this unit.
What better way to solve this problem? With a set of classic fairytales on CD the students will be able to “read” about irresistible characters in easy to follow plots. While listening to the CD and reading along in the books, the students will be able to improve skills such as intonation, expression, fluency, reading and listening comprehension, and reading accuracy. These sets will enable those who cannot read age appropriate text on their own to enjoy the same stories as the other children. Who doesn't love a good fairytale?
By supporting my project you will be showing my students the importance of reading, listening, and enjoying books! By supporting my project you will be enriching the lives of nineteen third graders who will enjoy these books...listening, learning, and laughing with their peers!
