My Students

Can you imagine being in a fifth grade class ready to enjoy the type of literature available for your age but as a struggling reader the books available for your reading level are more for a second grader?

My students are low level EC and ESL learners.

Many are from homes where mom and dad don't speak English, are working multiple jobs to survive, or don't have much education themselves to help their children. My students hear friends and teachers talk about many interesting books. But they are just too difficult for them to get through. They search the room and the library, choose books they are hearing about, but struggle to understand and then end up abandoning the book in frustration. These students want to learn. They want to join others in discussions of what they are reading and learning without embarrassment.

My Project

By having books on CD and tape and the resources of tape players and CD players my students will have their own personal tutors! In the classroom and at home they can listen to the stories other students are raving about. They can learn new vocabulary by seeing the words in the text as they follow the story line. A listening center in the classroom is all well and good but gets to be a little difficult when listening to chapter books and everyone is on a different page. By using their own personal player each student can work on a book to completion. Then another student can use the player and enjoy the same story or another. How excited my students will be when they can discuss the great literature everyone else is reading and not feel ashamed. Plus they will be exposed to so much new vocabulary!

Do you remember being read to as a child?

Do you remember your favorite story? I want my students to be able to say that they have so many favorite books that choosing one is just too hard. I want my students to look forward to taking a book home to read. I want my students to love reading as much as I do. I want to develop a lifelong love for learning!
