Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you give a child a chance, he can talk and talk. Give him paper and pencil, and he can write and write!

I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.

My school is a Title 1 school. My students come from a variety of ethnic and low socio-economic backgrounds. We have a high ELL population. Last year, unfortunately, our school was labeled as a "failing school" due to low state test scores. Despite the challenges our students face, our students, parents, and staff work together to give them the best possible education they deserve.

My Project

From seeing Mom write out her shopping list to jotting down Dad's "Honey-do" list, children see at an early age that people write to convey ideas. I want to help my students change their scribbles into meaningful text. During our Literacy block, students rotate through different stations. One of these stations is a writing center. At this center students will work with me on the fundamentals of writing. They will then have the opportunity to write independently. In our classroom we use special writing paper. This paper is designed to help beginning writers with letter formation, spacing , and size. I will use the magnetic handwriting paper to model proper writing. They will use the folders as a portfolio of their writings and add to it throughout the year.

My students love seeing how much their writing has improved.

At the end of the year, students pick from their portfolio and read one of their writing samples. They are amazed and so proud to share their hard work. Thank you for taking the time to consider donating to this project.
