My Students
When students have a personal, unwavering mentor in their reading lives to help them learn, they inevitably become better readers.
Unfortunately, for many of my students, that's simply not the case.
My eager first and second graders are coming to me this year with a desire to become better readers, but are confronted by a host of challenges that stand between them and their goals.
For one, most of their parents do not read English. So, aside from an older brother or sister at home (if there is one), adults in school are the only ones who are able to sit and read to them and help them grow.
My students also have learning disabilities that make reading a particularly troublesome task. Studies show that kids with learning disabilities become disenchanted with school based on their levels of frustration, leading to disastrous consequences later in life.
I want my dear students to be able to unlock the joys of traveling to wonderful imaginary worlds and reading about their favorite subjects. I want to give them wings to fly as readers. I want them to reach their potential and make them see how great they can be.
My Project
With the supplies I've requested, along with dogged determination by those of us in the classroom family, these impressionable, excited young readers can prosper.
The listening center will become a central part of our literacy learning. Students will sit around the stereo, headphones snug upon their ears, listening to books on tape, and following along intently in their books. Their fluency and word recognition will improve, but most importantly, their self-esteem will improve.
The requested headphones will serve the students using the vast literacy resources available online. They, too, will be enjoying audiobooks, some with animations. They, too, will be growing and learning.
With these crucial supplies, readers workshop will cease being a dreaded block of frustration, anxiety, and tension, and instead will become a cherished time for excitement and growth.
Picture a timid group of rambunctious six- and seven-year-olds entering their new classroom for the first time.
Aggravated by the challenges of learning that they feel make them different and worthless, they enter the year seemingly with two strikes already against them.
Please don't let them get to a third strike. Help these children rise above the challenges life has dealt them. Help them become proud readers for life!
I and my students thank you from the bottom of our book-loving hearts.
