My Students

Have you had the opportunity to listen to an unforgettable reading of a beloved book by an accomplished reader? Many of my students have only heard the books they have read to themselves or those read by a teacher with few or no other opportunities to experience fluent, expression-filled reading.

My students are mostly on or above grade level readers, but many of them have limited experiences outside of school.

They are a a very knowledgeable and curious group of students. They are always excited for new experiences and rise to meet high expectations. My school opened three years ago as a magnet school for technology, and our school philosophy is deeply rooted in allowing students to have a variety of experiences through technology, literacy, fine arts and enrichment activities. Although my students excel academically, we are still a high poverty school with many students who have limited access to technology or what many people would consider "real-world experiences" outside of school.

My Project

These resources would allow my students to increase their literacy skills through listening to fluent, expressive readers as they read along. Listening to reading is a component of the Daily 5 model for literacy education, and I have not had access to the technology or resources needed to appropriately integrate this component into our classroom. Students will have the opportunity to explore various kinds of books- picture books and chapter books- as they expand their knowledge of what it means to be a good reader. Students love to read together, and the opportunity to listen to a great piece of literature with their friends can be a valuable tool not only in their literacy development, but in our building if a classroom community as well.

Students are always excited to listen to a good book being read to them.

Ideally, these resources will help develop fluent readers to the extent that they are able to use what they hear as a model for their own reading, and for the creation of our own audio books. As a project-based school, it would be so exciting to use these materials as a starting point for a project geared toward the creation of classroom audio books that could then be shared with family and other students in our school.
