Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am always in admiration of the perseverance and grit I see in my students and their families. I am so lucky to arrive each day at a job I love, with smiling kids whose parents support and value education in the ways that they can.

My students deserve access to the same materials and opportunities that students in more affluent areas receive.

Our school is a Title I school, and most of my students participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program. Many of our students are second language learners and struggle academically. Many of our students reside in homeless shelters and foster homes. Most of them also do not have books, technology, or art supplies at home.

My students and their families face many obstacles in their daily lives, and I strive to ensure my students have access to the same materials and opportunities kids in more affluent areas receive.

My goal each year is to create an eagerness, excitement, and high engagement around learning and help each of them build a genuine love of learning.

My Project

This project will help foster a love of reading and listening to books while being independent learners! These books for our listening center will be used in small groups during center rotations.

"Books fall open, and we fall in." The magic of listening to a beautiful storyteller is part of the journey of learning to read and becoming a student who loves books.

I'm building a culture of book love in my classroom, and these books will be just the thing to help engage students, especially those that struggle with reading.

Listening to books on CD will provide students with the ability to start reading on their own, but it will also enrich my student's multi-sensory experiences with readers. Audiobooks provided during the listening center time will give my students an essential introduction to listening, which is a skill that they must master to learn to read. It also helps the students focus on the sounds of words read without interruption, exposes them to rich vocabulary, and provides a model of fluent reading.
