My Students

Our school, lovingly named "Baby West," was founded in 2016 with our first group of 100 KIPPsters ready to start climbing the mountain to college! Located in the heart of West Philly, an under-served and impoverished area of the city, we strive to provide all students with the keys to an empowered, choice-filled life through learning. Every day we exemplify what it means to be a KIPP team and family; we "work hard and be nice." During our first year together - we showed love, gratitude, grit, curiosity and bravery both in and out of the classroom. My hope is that we can continue to cultivate young students that are prepared to overcome any challenges they may face and leave the world better than they found it.

My Project

Many of my Kindergarteners are just beginning to read! Each day, students visit a variety of centers during our literacy block. I would really like to add a listening center to our current rotation.

My students are not ready to read independently and would benefit from hearing fluent readers, which is what a listening center would allow them to do.

A listening center would be extremely beneficial to my students' learning at this time. When students are offered the opportunity to have audiobooks in the classroom, their world can finally open up. Having books read aloud helps these struggling readers move beyond the decoding and right into learning. The more words they learn and incorporate into their knowledge-base, the better able they will be to access grade-level materials.
