Do you ever have difficulty reading and understanding books? The students in my classroom certainly do.
I teach 8th grade Learning Support at a public school. The students that I teach are in need of supplies that the school cannot provide to them: audiobooks!
Recently, my students listened to an audiobook (Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment) being read to them while they followed along in the book. I have never seen their comprehension scores so high, and they were so interested in the story! This is something that never happens with these students because their fluency is so slow that the book is boring and makes no sense to them.
Every quarter, students are required to read and take a test on a certain number of books using the Accelerated Reader program. Now, thanks to audiobooks, they generally seem to be excited about actually reading some new books because they can finally understand and enjoy the story.
The resources I need for my students now are audiobooks on CD to go along with the books in our classroom library.
Students will be able to listen to these books on a CD player in class, and check them out to listen to at home. While they listen to the audiobook and follow along with the book, they will be increasing their fluency and comprehension, and also their willingness to read. This will benefit their self esteem, reading comprehension, and their grades at school.
You will help instill a love for reading in my students that they have never been able to experience before in their lives. Thank you!
