This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it's like to pick up a book you love and get lost in it? First Graders are eager readers, but because they are beginning readers they can't always access the books they get excited about. Listening to books on CD allows them to read what they are interested in and builds fluency.

Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students are in the free or reduced price lunch program.

Many of our students are second language learners and struggle academically. Most of them also do not have books at home, and their parents are unable to read borrowed books, so providing opportunities in my classroom for them to be read to by someone other than me is essential to their reading development.

My Project

This project includes three portable CD players and a selection of books with accompanying CD's. I have chosen a variety of reading levels so that both my most struggling readers and also my stronger readers will have books that are accessible to their skill level, but also challenging enough to extend their skills and comprehension. I have selected fiction, non-fiction, folktales, songs, and poetry in order to provide experiences with a variety of genres. With the fulfillment of this project, I will create a listening center at which three students at a time will be able to practice their reading. This will impact 6 students a day with a rotation of two centers a day and will be used every single day of the school year. My students will increase their vocabulary and fluency and will have a comprehension activity to complete after listening to each story. They will become stronger readers!

These CD players and book sets are more than just supplies.

They will allow my love of reading to be transferred to my students. They will allow struggling readers to join in on the conversation on how great a book is. It will give them confidence and also teach them how to be fluent readers. This project will promote a lifelong love of books and reading. "Books open, and we fall in."
