Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in an urban high school where the majority of students live below the poverty line.
I have served in this district as a special education teacher for 20 years and happily continue to do so.
Teaching is my passion, my calling and I could not imagine doing anything else in this world.
My present classroom contains 10 significant intellectually disabled students, ages 16-19, of varying functioning levels. Two of my students use wheelchairs, five of my students are ELL’s ( English Language Learners) and one student is nonverbal.
Due to the handicapping conditions of my students preparing them to enter the adult world as independent as they can be is a high priority.
My Project
Teaching easy, basic cooking skills to my students is not only a part of our curriculum, but important skills to carry with them as they transition into their adult lives.
Our cooking lessons are not just about cooking and eating, but a culmination of various activities such as making grocery lists, travel training, locating items in a store, reading and following the instructions in a recipe, cooking, cleaning and properly storing food.
Students are required to review the food items needed for the recipe, figure out how many of each items are needed to prepare enough for the class, and then make a grocery list. We then figure out the best place to purchase the items, plan out the route using public transportation, travel to the store, shop for the items learning now to find the better deal, go through the checkout process, paying for the groceries and how to properly store the items until we are ready to use them.
When it’s time for the lesson, the students receive differentiated copies of a recipe, one is words only and the other is symbol supported so that all students may participate at their level.
The refrigerator would allow us to store the food items until needed and store any left over item safely and properly for future use. The griddle would allow students to cook items without the use of a stove, which we do not have access to, to further their cooking skills and abilities.
