Help me give my students snacks some healthy and some just tasty. We also need a heavy-duty pencil sharpener.

My Students

Our school is located in the inner city with underprivileged families striving for a better life. Single parents, grandparents, and older siblings continue to do their very best to instill a better way of living for their families. They face many challenges, but that doesn't impede them from wanting to learn or stop them from dreaming big.

We are 95% African American, 2% Haitian American, 2% Hispanic, and 1% Caucasian, with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Teachers create a safe, fun, and empowering classroom for our students to help them thrive in all areas of their lives. I love my students and spend most of my out-of-the-classroom time developing projects to enhance their learning and well-being.

My Project

This Lions Academy of Excellence T.A.L.E.N.T. program will allow participants an opportunity to connect with peers through enrichment and academic activities. Our school was selected so that students from 2nd through 8th grade will be participating in Dance/Music (Drumline), Gardening, Drama, Chess, and Sports/ Physical Fitness as well as completing their homework and receiving tutoring.

Envelope Folders for parental communication, snacks for rumbling tummies, and an electric pencil sharpener will assist in leveling the playing field for our lowest students.

Lions Academy of Excellence (LAE) will provide homework help to participants, thus reducing frustration and ultimately improving student performance as well as community building and providing an additional incentive for attending school. Students will be encouraged to share their voices in a safe space. Students who are eligible to participate in the program must currently be approved for free or reduced lunch. The student must have a standardized test score of level 1 or 2. Students who show a trend of 10 or more absences will also be targeted to participate in the program.
