Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I volunteer to teach twenty third, fourth, and fifth grade students guitar in an after school guitar program in urban Southern California. I was initially given 10 guitars by Little Kids Rock based on the East Coast where I attended a training to receive the instruments, but I am adding instruments in order to make our performance seem like more of a band. I am teaching students in a poverty stricken, gang riddled community and the only thing some of these kids look forward to is my class each week. These students are very dedicated. They are making great progress and are even offering to play other instruments. I have students trying to play my ukulele and my beat up snare drum. These are the first instruments many of these students have ever touched. It's amazing to see their faces. They love it.

I would like a keyboard to teach our students about the various chords and compositions they can play and add to the guitar songs. I have had several students volunteer to play different instruments and it has worked out quite well. I want to get several students interested in playing keyboard so that they can understand how great it sounds when they play with guitar. I am going for the 80s synthesizer sounds, classic piano introductions, cutting edge parts that fit with the music we play, etc.

I am a firm believer that students need to be exposed to a variety of music styles. My program is branching out to include a variety of music such as: country, jazz, bluegrass, and alternative music to give these students more of a well-rounded cultural experience. I have taught the band a majority of rock songs, including Journey's "Separate Ways" and the Chantay's "Pipeline." One of my student's blew me away and learned them on his own. Unfortunately, the keyboard I borrowed is on loan and I do not own one but I know that having one would be an asset to our band. Anything is possible I always tell my students and when one achieves, the next one gets in line to challenge themselves.

I hope that the donors know that they are contributing to an empowering special program. I live 50 miles from my school, but I am dedicated to promoting music and I want to thank each and every donor who makes it possible for me to run my amazing program. It is really changing lives in the inner city where students are lacking role models, equipment, and safe schools. We need to help these students make their dreams come true. I believe in them and thank you for believing in them too.
