Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!

My students need 24 nonfiction books about animals, and kits to create miniature deserts.

My Students

Can you imagine being 5 or 6 years old and not knowing that bears are real? I once overheard a dispute between my students about bears being real. One student was adamant that bears don't really exist.

Even more baffling than that is the fact that my school is located less than 1 mile from the city zoo and many of my students have never been!

Our kindergarten team recently received a grant that will pay for our admission and transportation to the zoo. Between the four kindergarten classes, we have about 88 students. Our school has a diverse population, with many students learning to speak English as their second language. 100% of the students at my school receive a free breakfast and lunch because of their high poverty levels. Our students are kind, hardworking and eager to go to the zoo!

My Project

On behalf of all 88 kindergarten students and the four teachers that teach them, I am requesting materials that will make our zoo experience even more engaging. We will use the sets of nonfiction animal books to enhance our classroom libraries. These colorful, easy to read books will inspire students to read about the animals before and after our zoo field trip. Students will develop their reading skills while they expand their knowledge about animals. The desert hothouse kits will create opportunities for our students to replicate a zoo exhibit while learning about what plants need in order to grow. They will gain academic vocabulary, as well as have the experience extended by this visual reminder.
