Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an awesome bunch of middle schoolers who attend a STEM Academy and are paving the way for future careers in engineering and science. The students at our school are from diverse backgrounds and ethnicity, who are always looking for new ways to expand their learning from the traditional model of school. They share a common bond, which is to promote our school mission in becoming innovators.

This past year, they worked in an elective class called Project Recharge that focused on energy and sustainability.

We brought it to an Envirolution Project Competition, where many Northern Nevada schools were represented and it was amazing when they won for "Best Behavioral Proposal."

Our students do not live in an affluent neighborhood and their families can't afford to pay for extracurricular activities or simple items such as school supplies. This was an exciting time for them because they saw that it didn't matter where you come from, you can achieve great things if you just become innovative and persevere.

My Project

The robotic equipment will enable my students to learn about engineering and problem-solving. We are asking for funding anytime during the 2019-2020 school year, preferably by October 30. This will allow students to use the equipment during a nine week quarter to build, code and dive robots with a mission or challenge presented to them through the curriculum.

Students will use team collaboration and perseverance in order to gain insight into real-world problem solving that will lead them to 21 century learning.

As a robotics teacher, I have the training and knowledge to pass on to my students; however, we do not have any equipment in our classrooms. The use of the equipment will be recycled and constantly used throughout the year by different students. Therefore, the amount of exposure to robotics will be great, since students from 6th to 8th grade will have hands on experience. These robots will allow us to grow our STEM lab at our middle school and reach students through the interesting field of robotics.
