Lion Dance:An Amazing Experience

My students need to experience cultural representations of the different ethnic groups represented in our school!

My Students

Our school is located in an ethnically diverse urban city. We are a Title 1 school where all students receive free breakfast and 80% + receive free or reduced lunch.

Our students are ethnically diverse and we provide opportunities to celebrate our diversity through special assemblies and performances.

They are proud of who they are, express themselves through many modalities, and are creative in their thinking. Our students express themselves through art and performing arts. They draw you into their lives by creating poetry and images of their experiences. They look to their teachers or community members for guidance and inspiration. Our students persevere and find ways to succeed at school and in our community.

My Project

Our school's yearly Multicultural Celebration includes an all-school assembly. Many of our students look forward to this celebration because they can proudly find performances that represent their culture and/or ethnicity. The performers include community groups, student groups from schools within our region, local artists, and performances from our elementary students. Performances represent countries like Somalia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Mexico, Philippines, China, and the United States. One of our school partners this year is the dance troupe at another elementary school.

The colors, movements, and sounds of their Lion Dance team will create an unforgettable experience for all our students!

Students consistently report that their favorite part of our assembly is the Lion Dance teams that visit & perform. The excitement and wonder in their eyes is enough to make your heart sing with pride and joy. The students are able to see themselves or experience something from another culture in all of the performances during our assembly. It creates a shared memory and a lasting impression that lets our students know that there is much to be celebrated and that, as our theme suggests, United We are Stronger!
