Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is an urban high school with a population of students living at the poverty level. I am one of three art teachers and teach studio arts and ceramics to grades 9-12.
Like many other school districts we are in a crisis situation when it comes to the budget. Most of our equipment is old and breaking down. I am making an effort to obtain materials and equipment that will update my studio classroom so the students can have the opportunity to do a variety of art projects with the proper tools.
The students are always interested in trying new techniques in art. The presses would give us the opportunity to learn how to create prints using linoleum and other experimental materials such as cork and cardboard.
The creative experience and the importance of having the proper equipment are both valuable. My students often feel our lack of good equipment and materials is a reflection of the value put on them by the schools system. That is why I am trying to update equipment and provide a great experience in my class. The students bring so much creativity and friendship to my class and I would like to be able to give back to them by providing the best I can.
