Linking Our Lives to Literature

My Students

My students are 25 of the kindest, most curious, and most generous people I know. They come to school every day with stories, questions, drawings, and jokes they can't wait to share.

We work hard to make connections in our class—to our books, our histories, and with each other.

The more we have to talk about, the more connections we make. I'd love to bring art, history, literature, and the world into our classroom and share with them through a rich variety of text.

My Project

Our classroom library is sorely lacking in many respects: relevance, diversity, reading level, area of interest, and supply vs. demand.

Creating a more robust classroom library with award-winning art and literature will increase our students’ exposure the world around them, one that they have yet been able to explore.

I want to make available to them both some of the classics, and some new favorites in that are in high demand in our school library. So many cultural references are made to art and literature, and our English Learner students are left out of the loop. Imagine if they had the inside scoop as to why I tell them, “Don’t kill Charlotte,” as they are about to stomp on a spider!
