Lincoln's Land of Literacy : Nonfiction Nook

My students need shelves, organizational materials, bulletin board materials, and seating, such as 4 flip top chairs, so that I can create a nook within our school for students to escape and read.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is it's own reward, it allows us to journey to far off places we may never see. Books open doors and introduce us to new characters we have never met that may have a profound influence upon our lives. My students are craving the opportunity to escape and discover new people and places.

We are a school in a large urban Indiana city.

A large percentage of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students have few or no books at home. Our school is overcrowded and we face a serious lack of space. The students we service are avid readers and would love the opportunity to "get away" during the day to read.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will allow me to create a little "nook" in a stair well with a nonfiction focus. My goal is to claim space in several "creative" locations around the school to reward our students for positive behaviors. I need shelving and baskets to house the books and chairs for the students to sit on while they read. Additionally, I am asking for a few materials to make the space aesthetically pleasing.

This project will allow us to support our developing readers, renew our dormant readers, encourage our underground readers and reward our avid readers.

In short, this is an opportunity to inspire all our readers to acquire the habit of reading that will last a lifetime.
