My Students
Our inner city students come from various backgrounds, and English is not always their native language. They come to school wanting to learn, and they work hard because school is the safest place for a lot of them. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
When working in the Discovery Lab, it’s about applying creative thinking and design skills to transform our STEM projects to STEAM projects, encouraging students to imagine all the possibilities when their creative thinking meshes with engineering.
Going from a STEM school to a STEAM school is an important transition to show students the role art plays not only in the design process but in everyday life throughout our world. It's also about engagement.
When students enter my lab, excitement builds because they know they have challenges that they need to face like engineers, scientists, and many other creative professionals do in the real world. Students love working with their hands to create something or solve a problem. Our school is a wonderful place to learn because of the environment created by the staff. We show our love of learning to our students.
My Project
Our fourth and fifth-grade students are beginning their study on electricity. They are at a point in their learning, where they have a specific question they want to know the answers to and want to figure them out on their own. Using Snap Circuits gives my students the opportunity to not only test out their ideas about electricity, but it allows them to create their own design process involving the science concepts of sound and light. The amount of pride they feel when creating their own challenge and solving it is truly amazing. Something else that is very important is they also learn what it is like to fail. Not everything they create or design is going to work correctly the first time. They learn in the Discovery Lab that when they fail - it is just their first attempt in learning! The other great part about the materials I'm requesting is that they can not only be used by the 4th graders in their Electricity Unit, but they can also be used with students throughout the school.
Please help my students unleash their creative abilities in the engineering and design process to figure out how electricity works!
Projects like this give my students that added edge they need to help compete for a seat at a STEM middle/high school to push them to their future careers in engineering!
