My Project

Help me give my students the flexible seating essential for creative writing and the art supplies to bring their stories to life!

Every year I realize more and more how much flexible seating and art projects help students do better in school.

We begin every year with writing a story inspired by the book we read in my English class. Students brainstorm together to think about how their main characters will overcome an obstacle in their life, travel a long distance, and somehow grow through the process.

Writing is incredibly stressful for some students: their mind wanders and they have a hard time concentrating. Flexible seating helps to keep kids on track and motivated; they may tip back in their stools while concentrating on where their story goes next.

I also need classroom LED lights to enable flexible seating and project based work to go well. Having lights to tell kids what the correct voice zone (red is silent, blue is talking to a partner) helps visual learners and the constant reminder of the voice zone means I’m not using my voice to let students know what the expectations are. This is essential during the crazy project time that comes next!

Halfway through our stories, we pause on writing to create 3D dioramas of the most essential part of our narratives. This is a great aspect of a flexible classroom: students who were stuck on their stories now have a visual medium to work through plot elements. We use glue guns, popsicle sticks, and paint to create part of their stories and students are reinvigorated to continue their stories with new and fresh ideas.
