This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently have a group of 24 fabulous second-graders in a dual language classroom. They live in a low-income, high poverty stricken inner-city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. Despite this, they are ready, willing, and excited to learn! They tackle challenges and strive to do their best. They are resilient, respectful, and hardworking students.
My Project
During a staff meeting, a colleague shared an idea that she uses with her class. Flashlight Fridays, reading with the lights outs! What a wonderful way to instill an even deeper love of reading in my students. By the end of the week, I want my students to participate in Flashlight Friday. The addition of these mini flashlights, finger flashlights, batteries, and alphabet pop-its will allow students to read a book that interests them while sitting anywhere in the room they chose while the lights are off. The change in atmosphere and quiet setting is just the right touch to make reading independent. Reading should be fun. Flashlights are always fun.
Let's have Fridays be Fun Flashlight Fridays where my class can use flashlights to "read", enjoy and relax with their books under their table or anywhere in the classroom with a stuffed toy!
